Our 2024 Hiking Adventures: Exploring the Beauty of Nature Together
This year has been one for the books! My husband and I set out to embrace the outdoors, reconnect with nature, and challenge ourselves through some incredible hiking adventures. From snow-covered trails to breathtaking mountain vistas, we’ve walked through every season and terrain imaginable. Each step has reminded us of the beauty, resilience, and joy that comes from staying active and living a life filled with exploration.
The Journey Begins: A Snowy Start in February
We kicked off 2024 with some chilly treks! A visit to Tonto Natural Bridge State Park in Payson, Arizona (0.4 miles) allowed us to take in the beauty of the waterfall above the canyon, framed by snowy landscapes. The next day, we braved the snow-covered Horton Creek Trailhead and Derrick Trailhead, located in Tonto National Forest (5.5 miles), where we even spotted bear prints—a humbling reminder of the wildlife that shares these spaces with us.
Springtime Adventures: Blooming Trails and Scenic Views
Spring brought new adventures and warmer weather. We explored Treasure Loop in Lost Dutchman State Park, part of the Superstition Mountains/Wilderness (March 17), and later enjoyed short but memorable walks at Slide Rock State Park near Sedona (0.25 miles) and Christopher Creek near Payson (1.0 mile). Although snow still lingered on the Mogollon Rim, our trek around Christopher Creek (0.5 miles) was serene and refreshing.
April was a standout month for us. A sunrise trek at Brown Trailhead in Apache Junction (0.9 miles) set the tone for a challenging afternoon hike up Praying Hands to Massacre Falls by way of Treasure Loop Trail in the Superstition Mountains/Wilderness (9 miles). Later that month, we completed a breathtaking 13-mile loop around Weaver’s Needle in the Superstition Wilderness, one of our most memorable adventures to date. I even wrote a detailed post and published a video about this incredible journey—you can link here to view it.
Autumn and Winter: Wrapping Up the Year
As the seasons changed, we kept exploring. November brought crisp air and gorgeous views as we hiked Peralta Trailhead to Freemont Saddle in the Superstition Wilderness (5.5 miles). A second trip to Tonto Natural Bridge State Park (1.5 miles) had us descending into the canyon for an up-close experience of the waterfall.
In December, we ventured to Wave Cave Trail (3.76 miles), accessed via Carney Trailhead in the Superstition Wilderness, and Butcher Jones Trailhead at Saguaro Lake (6.74 miles). We ended the year with a two-part trek at Treasure Loop and Syphon’s Draw in Lost Dutchman State Park (3.27 miles and 2.8 miles). Each hike felt like a celebration of the year’s accomplishments and the strength we’ve gained along the way.
More Than Miles: What These Adventures Mean to Us
In total, we’ve trekked over 67 miles this year, a testament to our commitment to staying active and thriving together. Each hike was a chance to not only challenge ourselves physically but to reflect on the importance of connecting with nature, staying healthy, and savoring every moment.
These adventures have also reinforced the value of a plant-based flexitarian lifestyle in maintaining the energy and stamina we need for these excursions. Eating clean and staying fueled with wholesome, plant-focused meals has made a noticeable difference in how we feel before, during, and after each hike.
Sharing Our Journey
We’ve captured countless photos and videos along the way, from the snowy vistas of February to the golden hues of late autumn. Some of our favorite moments include the awe-inspiring views of Weaver’s Needle, the serene beauty of Saguaro Lake, and the quiet joy of spotting wildlife tracks in the snow. I'm excited to have been able to share these memories with you! Whether you’re an avid hiker or simply looking for inspiration to get outdoors, I hope these visuals encourage you to lace up your shoes and explore.
Side Note: Apologies if the images take time to load. I had issues deciding which ones to upload and which ones to cut. This year, I plan to learn more about video recording while trekking. Till then, enjoy the slides!
