Why I Ditched Diet Labels at 60: Embracing the Plant-Based Flex Way

When I turned 60 in 2024, I didn’t just celebrate a birthday—I stepped into a new mission.


After years of experimenting with everything from raw food and juice cleanses to veganism and high-protein trends, I finally admitted something to myself: I was tired of chasing the “right” diet.

I didn’t want to be ruled by rules anymore. I wanted something that felt aligned, flexible, and sustainable. That’s when I fully embraced the plant-based flexitarian lifestyle, and it changed everything.


Now at 61, I feel more energized, balanced, and at peace with food than I ever did in my 40s and 50s.


Letting Go of Labels, Gaining Freedom


For decades, I believed the tighter the food rules, the better the results. But the older I got, the more I realized how much that kind of rigidity can backfire.


Labels like vegan, raw, keto, and paleo came with boxes—and I was constantly trying to squeeze myself into them. But life isn’t one-size-fits-all, and neither is nutrition.


So I stopped labeling myself.

I stopped chasing extremes.

And I started listening to my body, my lifestyle, and my values.


What “Flexitarian” Means to Me


To me, being a plant-based flexitarian means eating mostly whole, plant-based foods—but leaving room for flexibility. Sometimes that looks like a veggie stir-fry with tofu. Sometimes it’s a nourishing bowl of lentil soup with a soft-boiled egg or a piece of grilled fish.


It’s not about perfection—it’s about progress, peace, and plants.


The pressure is gone. The guilt is gone. And honestly, so is the bloat, brain fog, and chronic fatigue I used to battle regularly.


61, Strong, and Still Thriving


I started Plant Based Flex in 2023 as a way to share my journey—my recipes, my mindset shifts, and the simple things that help me (and my husband) thrive beyond 60. I’m not a nutritionist or personal trainer—just someone who’s been through it and wants to feel good, live well, and age vibrantly.
